    Spembly Works building. I’m a bit obsessed by this Spembly Works building. I’m a bit obsessed by this mid-1950s modernist building. When I was younger I was always fascinated by its rounded glass front making it look like a ship. Some time after I left Chatham it was converted into flats - with balconies retrofitted some following the curve of the “prow”. Unfortunately the company behind it failed to fully complete the project and went into receivership. The building fell into serious disrepair with Medway Council finding it “had not been constructed to satisfy minimum standards of building regulations” - eventually cumulative neglect let to catastrophic failures. Eventually vandalism, squatters and neglect took their toll leaving it in its current very sorry state. It does not lie in a designated conservation area, nor is it listed. Currently no official redevelopment plans exist.
